한국화이자제약이 회사의 시그니처 제품인 비아그라 등 특허만료 의약품 총 15개에 대한 수입허가권을 매각한 것으로 뒤늦게 확인됐다. 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 백신과 치료제로 글로벌 의약품 시장의 판도를 바꾼 화이자가 ‘위드 코로나’에 발맞춰?코로나19 백신·치료제와 혁신 신약에 선택과 집중을 하겠다는 것이다.
한국화이자는 연매출 1,000억 원이 넘는 블록버스터를 포함한 15개 의약품의 수입허가권을 올 상반기 비아트리스코리아㈜에 양도양수했다고 20일 밝혔다. 복제약만 290가지가 넘는 대표 발기부전치료제 비아그라를 비롯해 연매출 1,700억 원으로 국내 처방 1위를 지킨 고지혈증 치료제 리피토, 고혈압 치료제 노바스크, 통증치료제 쎄레브렉스도 포함됐다.
이 의약품들은 특허가 만료됐지만?‘황금알을 낳는 거위’처럼 상당한 매출이 보장된 제품들로 꼽힌다. 업계 관계자는 “통상 글로벌 의약품 시장에서는 오리지널 의약품(오리지널)의 특허가 만료되면서 복제약이 들어오면 신약으로서의 가치가 줄면서 오리지널의 약제가 떨어지기 마련”이라면서도 “국내에선 해외와 달리?오리지널을 찾는 수요가 높고 약제비 구조상 특허만료 의약품도 가격이 크게 떨어지지 않아 시장성이 있다“고 설명했다. 이 때문에 한국화이자가 이 제품들을 통째로 판 건 코로나19 백신·치료제와 혁신 신약에 집중하겠다는 의지로 읽힌다.
회사는 또?지난달 코로나19 백신과 치료제를 전담하는 ‘코비드사업부’를 신설하고 항암제 파트를 이끌던 송찬우 부사장을 코비드사업부 총괄 부사장으로 인사 이동했다. 이로써 한국화이자제약의 사업 부문은 △내과질환 △백신 △염증 및 면역질환 △희소질환 △호스피탈 △항암제 등 6개에 더해 △코비드까지 7개가 됐다. 한국화이자제약 관계자는 “기존 6개 사업부가 모두 중요하고 매출이 잘 나와서 내부에서조차 우선순위를 가리기 어려웠다”며 “특허 만료된 약제는 과감하게 팔고 혁신 신약 사업부만 남기기로 했다“고 설명했다.
